Death of the Red Baron - Highest scoring ace of WWI | 80 victories, 21st April 1918
On the morning of 21st April 1918, Rittmeister Manfred Von Richthofen of Jagdgeschwader (Jasta) 11, the famous Red Baron, was shot down after flying low over the Somme. Initially taking off with 8 other Fokker Dr.Is on a routine interception sortie against two Australian RE8s, Richthofen later became engaged in a dogfight against 209 Squadron RAF over Sailly-le-sec. During the dogfight, Captain Roy Brown who was leading 209 SQN saw friend and novice pilot Lieutenant Wilfred May being followed to ground level by Richthofen’s red triplane. As Brown dove to intervene, Richthofen received significant ground fire from Australian positions as he followed May past Vaux-sur-Somme. A single bullet...

    To understand those times guys, back then Yamamoto was the Osama bin Laden of our time. In the U.S., like bin Laden, Yamamoto was hated in every sense of the word. Parishioners would in churches across the Nation, led by the pastors, would in unison pray for the U.S. military to cause Yamamoto a violent painful death. Moreover, as when the Obama administration successfully killed bin Laden and announced "we got him" (which was followed by celebration nationwide), the announcement of Yamamoto's killing was met with jubilation and praise for the men who carried out the mission. On another front, I don't know what you guys are smoking, but all during WW II, and actually in all warfare past, top military commanders have always been a prized target. And the rules of warfare have always allowed for the killing of top military leaders.

    Some sources state that more planes were destroyed. The climatized hangars, that allowed the technicians to work comfortably in winter, were destroyed. Thousands of spare parts, instruments, lots of aviation fuel, were also destroyed. Those "few days" when the airlift was stopped, meant death for thousands of almost starved germans. A week later, with his soldiers starving, Paulus capitulated.

    Richthofen’s cousin, bring a novice pilot was told to keep away from any developing action. As shown, Richthofen went after May following the attack on his cousin. Richthofen broke his own rules of air combat, that of target fixation. Richthofen was known to be significantly battle fatigued and depressed by April 1818, through loss of so many comrades.

    Bravo for quality details of the aircraft involved. Nice to see Dr 425/17 in realistic colouring and markings. Often incorrectly depicted as bright red or scarlet. Some arguments persist regarding the shade of red but I think you have it as close as possible, based on existing souvenir pieces. Many thanks 👍🏼

    People point to Operation Chastise, the RAF raid to destroy the Ruhr dams in 1943 by 617 Squadron ('The Dambusters') as a successful low-level attack by heavy bombers, but when you take a closer look at the raid the awful cost is apparent. 19 Lancasters set out to strike six German dams: the Sorpe, Mohne and Eder (primary targets, the Sorpe most of all), plus the Ennepe, Lister and Diemel dams (secondary targets). That's a big ask for only 19 planes and 8 of them never came home, having either been shot down by flak on the way to, over, or on the way back from the targets, or else due to collisions with power lines. So that's almost a 50% loss rate right there. Additionally two Lancasters (piloted by Geoff Rice and Les Munro) aborted and returned early due to damage, Rice from a very close call when his Lancaster struck the sea and his bomb was torn off, and Munro when his Lancaster was hit by flak and the intercom (vital for a low-level precision attack) was destroyed. So for this success over half of the attacking force was lost. The Mohne and Eder dams were breached but both were repaired fairly quickly and neither was ever attacked again. For 617 there was a brutal postscript in the form of Operation Garlic, another low-level attack that was intended to destroy the Dortmund-Ems shipping canal. Nine Lancasters made two attempts (14th and 16th September 1943) to destroy the canal and a total of six were destroyed, again due to a combination of flak and terrain. Both Dambuster pilots, (David Maltby and Les Knight) who had breached the Mohne and Eder dams, died during Operation Garlic, as did both of the reserve crews who had been stood down on the night of the Dams raid, and the crew of Wing Commander Guy Gibson VC who had led the attack on the dams. Gibson himself wasn't with 617 for Garlic and his crew was fliying with Squadron Leader George Holden, his replacement. Unused to low flying, Holden flew too high on the first Garlic raid and was shot down. It was his first and only operation with 617, which gained a reputation as a suicide squadron. As a result of this carnage the RAF never again attempted a low-level raid.

    This was the Mediterranean equivalent of the battle of the Bismarck Sea in the Pacific, in the same year. ‘dolf’ for his fetishism of his darling feldmarschall Rommel’s generalship, got handed down to himself another doubled-down Stalingrad. After Alamein & Torch, Rommel decided there’s nothing else to do but cut & run out of Afrika But his dear fuehrer ordered him to stay & fight, vanquish or die. So he sent more troops & arms to Tunisia to in the end provide : - the 🇺🇸 with much needed training - the 🇬🇧 with the apotheosis of their African Trilogy - the 🇮🇹 with the iron will to get out of the war - nazi Germany with another giant defeat - & himself, ‘dolf, with a Colonel Stauffenberg & his bomb 💣

      There is a video of an interview with a 103 year old Australian infantryman who was there when it happened. He said it was impossible that from where the Australians were, that they shot Manfred von Richthofen down. Now you get these so-called experts that weren't there talking about angle of the shot etc. completely dismissing the fact that the aircraft is bouncing around and twisting and turning, trying to evade Canadian Roy Brown from shooting him down.

    • @nunyabusiness4904
      @nunyabusiness4904 Месяц назад

      @@marklelonde6684 There is actually a lot of debate over who shot down the Red Baron, the RAF credited Brown with the kill, but Brown himself never really spoke much about what happened that day, but now historians and ballistics experts generally agree he was killed by an Anti Air Machine Gun on the ground, the bullet that killed him entered from his right underarm and exited next to his left nipple. This information was taken from the Red Baron’s Wikipedia article.

    • @marklelonde6684
      @marklelonde6684 Месяц назад

      @nunyabusiness4904 I've read it all. Brown didn't say much because killing is a messy business, and after killing people to become an ace himself. It made him sick instead of wanting to brag about it. Experts after the fact... they were never there! I'll believe the Australian infantryman that was right there vs people giving their opinion decades later.
